HEL
A new Icelandic opera
23 and 24 May
Hel is a new Icelandic opera, based on a classic and highly influential Icelandic story about the choices people make in their lives – the need for freedom versus the need for security. The production company behind the opera, Hr Niels (Mr Niels), is relatively new and the talents within it possess much experience, both in opera and theatre.
The composer, Sigurður Sævarsson, completed a master’;s degree in Composition and Singing at Boston University in Spring 1997. His latest work is The Hallgrimur Passion, a religious cantata for soloists, choir and orchestra, based on the Passíusálmar (Hymns of the Passion) by Hallgrímur Pétursson. It was premiered in Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík, on Good Friday 2007.
Singers: Ágúst Ólafsson, Jóhann Smári Sævarsson, Hulda Björk Garðarsdóttir and chorus
